I love hearing songwriters talk about the inspiration behind the lyrics they've written. I've watched countless episodes of VH1's "Storytellers" and any "Behind the Music" documentaries I can get my hands on for exactly this reason.
Of all the stories I've heard, though, this one stands out: Dan Wilson, speaking about his 1999 hit, "Closing Time," which most people assumed was about a bar closing down.
His explanation of the inspiration behind the song is far more poignant, and hilarious. This has to be the funniest "story behind the song" I've ever seen. Watch and enjoy:
