The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day.

Thirty years ago, on November 29, 1981, Natalie Wood drowned while on a boating trip with her husband, Robert Wagner, and her movie co-star, Christopher Walken. I remember hearing about the murder, and feeling awful because she'd always talked about how fearful she was of the water. Drowning was one of her worst nightmares, and it's terrible that she had to die that way. There were rumors that she was drunk and fell overboard, but nothing was ever proven.
Early snowstorm here in the Northeast, and the trees and flowers in my neighborhood are NOT happy. We've lost power briefly a couple of times, so I'm posting this while I can. As I'm typing, I can hear loud "CRACK" sounds coming from outside...the trees on my street are dropping, one by one. My next door neighbor's tree came down across our driveway just a few seconds after my husband pulled his car into the garage. He and his car are fine...our mailbox wasn't quite as lucky.![]() |

I can't believe my firstborn is now a high school graduate. How is this possible? Where did the years go?? Wasn't she just in the other room fingerpainting? Yes, yes I'm sure she was.
Christmas Eve is my favorite holiday, but Easter is a close second. I love getting the girls dressed up for church (although, these days, they take care of most of the primping themselves), I love any excuse to eat chocolate, and I love passing on holiday traditions. Starting the day off with Mass, and then eating ourselves into oblivion...what could be better?
Took a trip to visit my cousin Joyce in Virginia this weekend to celebrate a "milestone" birthday with her. In a nod to all of the Saturdays we spent at our grandparents' house in Brooklyn, I gave her a bottle of Absolut Brooklyn vodka (special edition by Spike Lee). I have no idea how the stuff tastes--not a big vodka fan--but it says it's flavored with apple and ginger. I also made some shot glasses for her to add to her collection.
Captiva Island, off the coast of Ft. Myers in Florida, is one of our favorite places in the world. It has beautiful beaches, casual restaurants with excellent food, and a laid-back vibe that my family and I love. It's also well-known for its seashelling opportunities, although I confess, I have boxes of collected shells sitting in a closet here that we brought home to turn into craft projects that will probably never materialize. Ah well...
Went to the first Town Hall of the year today, where Governor Christie took questions from the crowd and talked for about an hour about issues that concern residents of New Jersey. He discussed the Christie Reform Agenda and challenged everyone there to join him in making the changes necessary to put New Jersey back on track. He talked a lot about "shared sacrifice," and how all state workers are going to have to kick in more for their healthcare if we want the system to stay afloat. The Governor was in fine form today: funny, engaging, and as usual, very quick on his feet. He's got a tough job to do, but he certainly seems up to the task.
